Why I’d choose Kiawah Island for an executive retreat.
I’ve been fortunate to visit Kiawah Island in South Carolina several times over the years, and every trip leaves me with the same thought:
This place feels different.
If you’re planning a corporate event, there are countless destinations with impressive hotels and meeting spaces. What makes Kiawah different isn’t the meeting space itself. It’s everything surrounding it.
The island is private, and you feel that almost immediately. There isn’t a tourist-strip atmosphere, crowded beaches, or constant activity competing for your attention. Instead, Kiawah moves at a slower pace. People ride bikes instead of sitting in traffic, walk the beach before breakfast, and linger over dinner instead of rushing to the next thing. It feels less like a resort destination and more like a place where you’ve stepped away from everyday life.
That slower rhythm changes the way people spend time together. Conversations happen more naturally, relationships have room to grow, and the destination itself becomes part of the experience. For leadership retreats, executive meetings, customer events, and incentive programs, that's a tremendous advantage.
The Sanctuary sets the tone.
The Sanctuary, the island’s only hotel, reflects everything that makes Kiawah unique. It’s elegant without feeling flashy, luxurious without being overdone, and quiet in a way that's becoming harder to find. If you’re hosting executives or VIP guests, it’s an exceptional home base for the event.
For smaller leadership teams, I’d also consider renting a house or villa. Some of the most valuable conversations rarely happen in the meeting room. They happen over coffee before breakfast, around the dinner table after an evening out, or on the back porch while planning the next day’s bike ride. Kiawah naturally creates opportunities for those moments.
Meeting spaces across the island.
One thing that surprised me was the variety of meeting venues available throughout Kiawah. Whether you’re planning a leadership retreat, customer meeting, or a larger corporate gathering, there are several excellent options.
The Sanctuary offers ballrooms, boardrooms, and hospitality suites for groups ranging from intimate executive meetings to events with hundreds of attendees. The West Beach Conference Center provides 23,000 square feet of dedicated meeting space, while the Ocean Course Clubhouse, Osprey Point Clubhouse, and Turtle Point Clubhouse each offer their own unique settings overlooking some of the island’s most recognizable golf courses.
The meeting spaces are impressive, but what really makes them special is everything that happens before and after the agenda.
Forget the shuttle. Ride a bike.
One of my favorite things about Kiawah is that bicycles are simply part of life here. Miles of paved paths connect nearly everything on the island, making it easy to ride to breakfast, the beach, dinner, golf, or one of the marsh overlooks without ever getting in a car.
That changes the experience in ways I didn’t expect. Instead of everyone disappearing after the day’s meetings, people naturally spend more time together. Even riding to dinner becomes part of the memory.
Let the island do some of the work.
The beaches are wide, quiet, and remarkably uncrowded. The golf courses are world class, the tennis facilities are outstanding, and the marshes, maritime forests, and observation towers invite you to slow down and explore.
You don’t have to manufacture memorable experiences here because the destination already provides them. Whether it’s an early morning beach walk, spotting wildlife along the bike paths, or spending an afternoon on the golf course, Kiawah gives attendees room to recharge between meetings.
It’s the little moments you’ll remember.
One of my favorite evenings is riding over to Ryder Cup Bar overlooking the Ocean Course. Grab a seat outside if you can and order the crab cake sliders. They’ve become one of my favorites.
Another stop I always recommend is Cherrywood BBQ at Osprey Point. Our family never skips the Brussels sprouts, and they've become part of our Kiawah tradition.
Spend an afternoon trying your hand at catching blue crabs, climb one of the marsh observation towers, or simply grab a bike and see where the trails take you. Those small moments often become the stories people remember long after the presentations are over.
Charleston is the perfect bonus.
One of Kiawah’s biggest advantages is that you don’t have to choose between a quiet island retreat and a vibrant city. Charleston is less than an hour away, making it easy to plan an evening around some of the country’s best restaurants before returning to the peaceful rhythm of the island.
It’s the best of both worlds. You can enjoy an incredible dinner, wander the historic streets for a few hours, and still be back on the island before the day is over.
Is Kiawah right for every event?
Probably not.
If your event revolves around convention centers, exhibit halls, or a schedule packed from morning until midnight, there are destinations that may be a better fit.
But if your goal is to create an environment where people can slow down, build relationships, and have meaningful conversations between sessions, Kiawah offers something that’s becoming increasingly difficult to find.
